Feeding a lawn is not the same as fixing the ground.
Topdressing means we spread a thin layer of material over the entire lawn and work it down into the grass.
Fertilizer feeds the grass you already have. Topdressing works on the ground that grass is standing in. It fills the low spots, softens hard-packed dirt, and gives thin turf somewhere to spread into.
It goes on best right after aeration. The cores leave the lawn open, so the material drops in around the roots instead of sitting on top of a packed surface. Book both and we do them on the same visit.

Walk your yard and look for these. Two or more, and topdressing does more for that lawn this year than another feeding.

Ruts, dips and hard ridges you feel when you mow. The mower scalps the high spots and skips right over the low ones.

You seed them in May and they thin out again by August. Seed dropped on packed dirt dries out before it ever roots.

We spread the material across the whole lawn, then work it down so it settles around the grass crowns. The layer stays thin enough that you still see grass through it — bury a lawn and you kill it. On its own it helps. Right after aeration it does a lot more, because the open cores carry it down to the roots instead of leaving it on the surface.

Is this the same as fertilizer?
No. Fertilizer feeds the grass you already have. Topdressing works on the ground it grows in. A tired lawn usually wants both, but they fix different problems.
When do you do it?
Spring or late summer. The grass has to be growing hard enough to come up through the layer, so we stay out of the heat of July and we do not put it down on frozen ground.
Do I need aeration too?
It works better with it. The cores give the material somewhere to go instead of leaving it on hard ground. Book both and we do them on the same visit.
